A 100-x 400-foot military aviation hangar with an attached administration facility.

Services Provided:

  • Delegated design of main member steel connections and miscellaneous steel (stairs, platforms and small equipment supports).
  • Performed a peer review of the EOR's design.

Project is part of the South Airfield Expansion Project at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station. Hangar footprint is 100-ft x 400-ft. Box truss clear spans 400 feet and supports a 28-foot tall sliding hangar door. The box truss height at midspan is 35 feet.

The box truss and buttress ends weighed in at 936,000 pounds (bolts, connection plats, stiffeners and main members). Over 15,000 bolts were used in the hangar. Connection axial forces in the truss ranged from 50 kips near mid span to 2,500 kips (2.5 million pounds) at the buttress supports. The heavy loading is due in large part to a concrete slab on top of the roof deck, which was installed to reduce sound propagation and increase security. The building is less than 50 feet away from an active seismic fault.

JTA built it’s own independent structural analysis computer model and developed any needed field strengthening (cover plate) details.
